hp13's playlist...

...picked up the guitar during high school days in the early sixties, just south of San Fransisco. listning to all of the "west coasties" around San Fran at the time.... back when coffee houses and small venues were the thing. Like Jerry playing pedal steel with the new riders in Menlo Park, or Santana playng at the middle school a couple o' blocks down the street. Like Niel singing about his ranch on the other side of Skyline, or like playing acoustic's while being in the "zone", to the ocean, or deep in the redwoods..... Most of the time since then I've been living in beautiful Oregon, and working as a cabinet maker / woodworker, and family man. Peace, hp

The Printer

Came home yesterday for the first time in a while. I've had this song in my head for quite some time, so I recorded it as soon as I got home.

Uploaded last night. Listened to it this morning. Wasn't happy.

Uploaded again today. I'm happier.

Let the bashing begin.

Breathe in Deeply

Ok, I've sort of forgotten how to play this. It's in a tuning I can't quite remember. But I found it and thought I'd put it up here as I haven't posted anything in ages.

I wrote it when I first got my present guitar. So a year and a half ago? It's a pretty emotional song.

VERSE 1

Air blows through doorways,
Shadows swimming in your eyes.
Fingerprints line the windows,
A small demise.

CHORUS

Warning all the pretty faces,
Warning all the simple minds.
You were so high when you crashed down,
It was so fast when you hit the ground.

I know, because you fell on me.

VERSE 2

Whispers breathe in deeply,
Eyelash fall upon the floor.
Blinks all sink into the teardrops,
And you miss it even more.

CHORUS

Warning all who point the finger,
Warning all who have done wrong.
You were so high when you crashed down,
It was so fast when you hit the ground.

I know, because you fell on me.

Sudden Sunset

This is the end of the line (I'm sure!) Oh, what a journey this collab has taken. This is my baby! So it's ended up here:

Sudden Sunset (composed by WritersBlock)

ToastedGoat - guitars, vocals
swordfish - additional guitar (with the heavy effects on them)
PuppetXeno - electronic tracks, orchestration, audio edits, treatments, mixdown
JimkDaAdtman - bells concept
WritersBlock - original MIDI file still audible during the choruses

Listen, enjoy and vote!

Big Cheers to all who helped, suggested, commented, encourged and participated. This is an amazing experience for me to here this song become a full recording as it's something I'm unable to do. Thank you.

erm... yes, that best explains it I think.

another experiment.

my favorite parts are 2:35 and 5:30.

I had loads of fun playing this one. It incorporates guitar, bass, violin, banjo, accordion, keys, and a small pill container filled with rice.

A Name Like Tobleron

It's "A Name Like Toblerone" it just wouldn't fit it all in.

I wrote aobut this woman down our hill who is like 30, but looks about 70. Sad sad story. So I wrote this song. Which probably has nothing to do with her, but was inspired by her.

VERSE 1:

Severed fingernails beneath the teeth she bites them with,
A silver bangle dangling from her wrist.
Knuckles white and hard from years of smoking cigarettes,
She doesn't have that long (I think you get the gist)

She's a sinker,
On a fishing wire.

VERSE 2:

She's this crooked little easel of a girl,
Clumps of hair they tear and fall about the place.
And when she smiles (which isn't often, and it takes a while)
It's like her lips against the grain of her face.

She's a sinker,
And she's cast away.

VERSE 3:

She has a name because her mother called her Toblerone,
She has a dog which she just calls Dog.
And when it yelps it coughs and splutters through the living room,
And wades its way into the niccotene fog.

She's a sinker,
She's a sinker,
She's a sinker,

And she's sinking down,

My Minds on Other Things

I promiced ages ago id post some of my early work, which in time, might get a look in with our new stuff.

Recorded this a while ago in my room using my acoustic, im sure it was recorded direct in to my line 6 guitar port.
The bongos shakers and vocals were done through my trusty condenser mic.

I didnt have much recording experience when i did this had some very basic multi track software. I send the final mix down to Dave a few weeks ago (its all thats left of it) on an mp3 and he had a go at remastering the main mix.

Anyway..... Hope you enjoy, like i say, its some early work.

Million Dollars

Here we are again. Here is the fourth song off the original HASTINGS recordings in Buffalo, NY. Again, I played drums, and worked out the arrangement on this track. This is a typical example of what living in a dreary place like Buffalo (1998-2002) can do to a man. The lousy weather and stagnant working conditions really come though in the vibe of this song.

Enjoy.

Straight up country, for a friend of mine who was a bronco champ... Turns out he didn't like the song, thought it was tongue in cheek!!! Is there any other way to write a country song??? Did it on my 8 track at home, played all the parts and sang all the parts. Kept me off the streets for a few hours anyway...

Not A Christmas Song

BAH HUMBUG HAHA! I didn't plan to write a christmas song, it just came out! I kinda like this a bit. I probably wont by next christmas, haha.

I hear the ringing of cash register bells,
And the greedy little laugh,
Of a chubby little boy...
We hate eachother 360 odd days a year,
Now we don our bestest smiles,
And drink our body weight in beer...

Christmas is here,
And I'm baracading myself in my room.
With some whisky and some smokes,
And I'm not coming out til new year.
Christmas is here,
And so are the relatives.
I'm boycotting the whole damn thing,
And this isn't a christmas song.

There will be no snow this christmas,
Only rain.

Snowscape

This one was inspired by some nice snowy day we had few weeks ago. That snow is gone now... So this isn't something I just did and I can easily dislike it now as I can listen to it with fresh ears. I tried to mix it to sound more symphonic. Point instruments away from face, soft levels, and no one gets hurt.

Awake and Dreaming

So...Here is my acoustic injection of estrogen...I didn't mean this song to come out so girly, but it is an intimate song.:)
I hope I represent this site well, but I need a bit of advice bc I'm afraid I have no ear for mixing. I've compressed and eq'ed and I can't tell any diff.

For starters:
1 Does the main vocal keep an intimate feeling without sounding weak? Is there too much reverb?
I used a condenser mic so I could try to make the impression of having a private conversation.

2 Do the vox harmonies blend well, as if they are of 1 voice?

3. I strummed the guitar with my thumb bc I wanted that "feeling". Does the guitar sound okay? (Keep in mind, my playing ability is limited as I taught myself and have no idea what I'm doing. It boils down to me needing more practice.):)

So, this is my first recording and I appreciate any constructive criticism so that I can improve;) I am sorry for the long post but I have many questions. Thanks.

I apologize also in advance for my half-ass job on the piano... eh, I'm learning.
